A little known fact: Optimus itself is a simple concatenation of ‘Opus One’ and ‘Dominus’. You can see why in a vintage like this. We have lovely parfumier’s floral essences. Violet and iris. Candlewax and incense. Crystalline is form, glossy in texture, this is quite solar, but in a very measured way. It has lovely poise and charm, impressive concentration but also great delineation and clarity in the midpalate. Truly excellent for what is, in effect, a second wine. Here the Côte Rotie similarities are very evident. 95.

Balanced vintage overall, concentrated with an enjoyable sense of restraint, vivid lift, baking spices, cumin, turmeric, blackberry and loganberry fruit. Unfiltered and unfined. Chloe Asseo director, Stephan Asseo owner and winemaker, from the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles. Mix of one year old and new oak, 63% new oak in this vintage.
