Beaulieu Vineyard
Georges de Latour emigrated from Bordeaux to California in 1883 and founded Beaulieu Vineyard in 1900. The name comes from the phrase “Quel beau lieu!”, "What a beautiful place!", which his wife uttered as she enjoyed the view over Rutherford in the Napa Valley.
After a trip to France in 1938, de Latour brought one of the most important wine personalities for the development of the entire Napa Valley from the Pasteur Institute in Paris to Rutherford in the form of Russian-born André Tchelistcheff, known as “The Maestro”. He was to shape viticulture in California like no other. In 1980, a cooperation with the Californian Davis University of Viticulture began in order to find a perfect Cabernet Sauvignon clone for the Rutherford terroir. After 14 years, they finally found what they were looking for with clones 4 and 6. Both characterize the flagship of the house, the Georges de Latour Private Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which Tchelistcheff first selected with the 1936 vintage.
Michel Rolland has acted as consultant since 2010 and Trevor Durling became head winemaker in 2017, only the fifth in the 120-year history of the estate.
