Did you know...
The conical indentation in the base of most champagne bottles may be practical for holding the bottle elegantly when pouring. However, that is not the reason why this indentation exists. The shape is due to the fact that a champagne bottle must be particularly stable. This is because the champagne continues to ferment in the bottle during the second fermentation. This creates a lot of pressure – usually 5 to 6 bar, but depending on the circumstances, the pressure can also be higher. By comparison, most car tires have a pressure of 2 to 3 bar.
