Chateau Valandraud

Also in Blanc!

Jean-Luc Thunevin is considered the enfant terrible of Saint Emilion! The former bank employee and DJ became famous for his Chateau Valandraud, which he first vinified from the 1991 vintage in his garage. He is therefore one of the co-founders of the “garage wine” scene. Today, he has long been one of the established addresses and also has a state-of-the-art, newly built winery and, since 2012, the red wine has also been classified as Premier Grand Cru Classe B

In recent years, it has also caused a sensation with its white wines. The 2020 Valandraud Blanc, for example, was awarded 99/100 points by renowned American wine critic Jeb Dunnuck and described as follows: “With integrated acidity, an almost red wine-like structured mouthfeel, and a great finish, this easily belongs up with the greatest whites in the vintage.”

A special feature of the wines is the high proportion of Sauvignon Gris. Thunevin likes to use these varieties as they cope better with hot temperatures and the last few years - with the exception of 2021 - have tended to be warm vintages. In addition to classic barrique barrels and 500-liter oak barrels, a small proportion is also aged in amphorae. The production quantities are very small, averaging around 3,000 bottles

Thunevin proves that he likes to go his own way with his latest coup, the Blanc de Clos du Beau Pere. The 2021 premiere vintage is the first white wine to be grown within the boundaries of the Pomerol appellation, an area known for its red wines and with an average price per hectare of €2 million. Due to frost, the yield per hectare was only 20 hl/ha. We were able to secure a small quantity here.
