(Saint-Julien; 52% Cabernet Sauvignon; 43% Merlot; 5% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 32 hl/ha; 13.5% alcohol; tasted at the UGCB press tasting at the Cité du Vin). A relatively easy pick blind, at least once one has this in one's mouth, with those most gracious and delicate, ultra-fine-grained and creamy Beychevelle tannins. This is perhaps a little narrower in frame and a little tighter to the spine than usual but it's charged with red and darker berry fruits, if a little less of its customary black cherry. This is fresh and dynamic though also a little less aromatically expressive at this early stage than is often the case en primeur. That said, as I return to the glass, the black cherries are starting to appear and a delicate florality is pushing up through the compact layers of fruit and I find even that little hint of walnut shell that I so often find here.

In the dry and hot 2022 vintage, I never quite found the signature gentle character of Château Beychevelle. In 2025, however, that softness has returned, and it does so with complete naturalness. On entry, a fine, mellow, creamy texture spreads across the palate like light cream, gradually unfolding the sweetness of blueberry tart and blackcurrant milkshake. Just as you begin to think everything is defined by softness, the structure starts to emerge. The tannins are notably concentrated; while still expressing the château’s habitual grace, they quietly reveal a hint of muscle beneath the sleeve. Compared to the soft, ragdoll-like image I once had in mind, this sense of strength feels slightly unexpected. Yet the wine is still young, and with aging, it is likely to settle into a more composed and harmonious expression.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2025 Beychevelle races out of the glass with vibrant notes of fresh blueberries, black currant jelly, and red currants, plus nuances of lilacs, charcoal, and iron ore. Medium-bodied, the palate shines with bright black, blue, and red berry flavors, supported by a lively backbone and fine-grained tannins, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. The blend is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. The alcohol is 13.4%.
94-96/100 Lisa Perrotti-Brown
Cloves and grilled red peppers, deep mulberry fruits, this is so delicious, charcoal and liquorice, St Julien balance, really luscious and joyful. Yield 32 hl/ha. Philippe Blanc director.
