Schrader 2021 Release
In 1988, an invitation to the Napa Valley Wine Auction from Christie's auctioneer Brian Cole awakened antiques and art dealer Fred Schrader's passion for wine. In 1998, he founded Schrader Cellars with his ex-wife, the well-known winemaker Ann Colgin. They do not have their own vineyards, but have long-term supply contracts with the legendary grape supplier Andy Beckstoffer.
They work exclusively with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, mainly from To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, supplemented by Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard in Rutherford and Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard in St. Helena. The sites are also distinguished by the use of different clones. Thomas River Brown has been responsible for the wines since 2000.
In 2017, Schrader sold his brand, still without his own vineyards, to Constellation Brands. They also own the Robert Mondavi Winery, among others, which means they now have access to the extremely large To Kalon share owned by the winery.
The wines are usually matured in 100% new French oak barrels from the Daranjou and Taransaud tonnelleries. Due to the forest fires, no 2020 vintage was bottled. With 2021, the company is back with an outstanding Napa vintage. Stylistically, Schrader wines tend to be on the opulent side, but always with a good tannin core.
