Wein aus Portugal

Portugal is primarily associated with port wine, a sweet fortified wine. It is a protected term: the grapes used must come from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. Port wine is named after the Portuguese port city of Porto, from where the wine is shipped internationally. Port wine has a high alcohol content. In order to make the wines more durable for export, they were fortified with alcohol in the early stages of fermentation.
