2022 Guillot Clauzel
The property managed by Guillaume Thienpont since 2018, a blend of 83% Merlot from old vines planted in the 1950s, on a terroir of surface soil, clay-gravel, red clay and deeper blue clay, with 17% Cabernet Franc, managed as usual but with a little less extraction and a little less new oak. Beautifully complex and floral on the nose, a backdrop of currants and griottes which allows the hawthorn, rose and violet nuances to shine, along with a touch of dark chocolate. The palate is very precise and cool, linear at first, with floral and mineral berry fruits, as lifted as the nose, with a linear definition, and a finely knit and firm backbone of tannins. Alexandre and Guillaume attribute the success of the dry 2022 vintage to the rather damp 2021 vintage, and they may well be right. An impressive composition, with a supple midpalate presence. This is surely the best Guillot-Clauzel Guillaume has made here. The alcohol is 14.5% on the label.
