(Saint-Émilion; 70% Merlot; 30% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 26 hl/ha; 13.5% alcohol; tasted at Canon-La-Gaffeliere with Stephan and Ludovic von Neipperg; certified organic). The 30th vintage and perhaps the best. We're back to the limestone here after our detour via Canon-La-Gaffelière. A sublime wine, as you know at this point in the tasting it's going to be. Cashmere replaces the silk of its sibling Saint-Émilions and you sense that immediatley from the aromatics. Black raspberry, blueberry (from the elevated Cabernet Franc presence in the final blend) and the black cherries we know and love from La Mondotte. This is sumptuous, monumental, dark in its black cherry and purple berry fruit profile and rich and soft in the mouth, with an extraordinary mouthfeel. Succulent, but it's a different and more opulent form of succulence, richer, deeper, and more obvious in its layering. Utterly divine. We're in 'best of ever' territory once again! A wine that would be haunting in its beauty were it not for the sheer dynamism that renders this so joyful.

Even before tasting, I knew that Château La Mondotte would carry the voice of limestone with particular clarity in 2025. As expected, from the first sip, a gentle, rhythmic impression of limestone sets the tone, giving the palate an immediate sense of structure and cadence. Cherry, black plum, and raspberry show vivid freshness, fully ripe yet supported by bright acidity. The acidity glides close to the palate, like a swallow skimming low, releasing bursts of fresh fruit as it sweeps across. The signature salinity arrives as expected, now joined by a gentle sweetness that lends the finish a warmer tone. In this vintage, new oak was moderated to 30%. (The proportion of new oak was reduced to 30% in this vintage.)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2025 La Mondotte swaggers out with confident notes of juicy black plums and boysenberry preserves, leading to accents of sandalwood, Indian spices, and dusty soil, plus a touch of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is filled with juicy black fruit and spicy nuances, supported by a lively backbone and velvety tannins, finishing long and opulent. The blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol is 13.5%. This is aging in French oak barrels, 30% new.
