(Saint-Émilion; 61% Merlot; 39% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 42hl/ha; pH 3.44; 14% alcohol; tasted a number of times, the last time, of course, at Canon itself with Nicolas Audebert). I love the purity of the cassis and blueberry aromatics, and that trace of violet with a little peony that I recognise as the signature of this glorious terroir - plateau and côteau together. There are freshly crushed peppercorns - both rose and green, with the natural freshness and aromatic interest that implies. A staggeringly beautiful wine, ample and intensely succulent, with perhaps less layering and density than Canon but the same quality of tannic management and the same precision, finesse and sheer sensitivity to terroir. I love the little note of clove that reinforces the delicate florality in a way. As ever, something of a coup de coeur for me. Definitely the best ever from here, with both density and energy and a delightful signature of powdery limestone tannin.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2025 Berliquet hops from the glass with vivacious notes of wild blueberries and black raspberries, opening out to a fragrant undercurrent of peonies, star anise, and wild sage with a touch of tilled loam. The medium- to full-bodied palate is bright as a penny with a crisp line and very fine-grained tannins supporting the tightly wound blue and black fruit layers, finishing with a skip in its step. The blend is 61% Merlot and 39% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol is 14% with a pH of 3.44. It will age 16–18 months mainly in French oak, 38% new, with 23% amphorae. Yields were 42 hl/ha.

Years of refinement have rendered Château Berliquet supple and composed, its edges softened into quiet poise. The texture is gentle, the fruit flows with juicy ease, and rose petals release a delicate, tender charm, each detail speaking of a lineage held with care. Yet I would say this: the unruly spirit at its core has never disappeared. Though the tannins have become as fine as chalk dust, they still carry a trace of something instinctive, an underlying impulse that quietly persists. This is what defines Château Berliquet, and it is precisely this sense of a once-wild nature finding its way back that moves me most. Credit must go to the winemaking team for preserving that inner drive, and I can only hope that, in the years to come, we will continue to hear that restrained yet unmistakable roar from within.

Juicy acidities, cloves, blueberry, fresh mint, clearly set to soften and smooth over ageing, the overall structure has energy and momentum that lift through the finish, great quality and a healthy 42 hl/ha yield. 3.44pH. Harvest September 3 to 17. Tasted twice.
