(Saint-Estèphe; 65% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% Merlot; 3% Cabernet Franc; 2% Petit Verdot; a final yield of just 29 hl/ha; pH 3.73; IPT 80; 13.6% alcohol). This is divine aromatically and has me convinced, before I even put it in my mouth, that it's the best vintage of Phélan I've had the privilege to taste. That impression is fully confirmed on the palate. We have incense, myrrh, violet and lily of the valley, even a little rose water, blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry, lovely graphite notes and a little white pepper. This is beautifully composed, quite sinuous and supremely elegant for a wine from an appellation that is usually more characterised by a certain direct, authentic punchiness and slight rusticity. There's none of that here. I'm in raptures. Franck Phélan, the second wine (91-93), is already extremely impressive, with a gorgeous focussed precision to its blackcurrant-charged mid-palate and a lovely clarity and freshness.

While tasting the second wine, I had already anticipated the high level of Château Phélan Ségur 2025, yet the moment the wine truly touched the palate, I could not help but feel a shiver run through me. The aromatics are so pure and crystalline, like a mirror reflecting layers of bayberry, cherry, and pomegranate in precise contours. Then, a gentle kiss of violet drifts outward to graze the cheek, carrying a touch of warm mocha that draws you in. The body appears rich, yet feels almost weightless; fragrance and vitality rise simultaneously at the very instant of entry, leaving no time for thought before pulling you into the mirrored surface. The surface shimmers, breaks, and you slip into a vivid, almost surreal dimension where fruit-laden waves rise and fall around you, submerging you again and again, until you drift into a dreamlike state.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2025 Phélan Ségur sails from the glass with energetic notes of cassis and red currant jelly, plus nuances of lilacs, fragrant soil, and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate is bright and refreshing with a firm frame of lightly chewy tannins and a red berry lift on the finish. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. It has an alcohol of 13.6% and a pH of 3.73 with an IPT of 80.
92-94/100 Lisa Perrotti-Brown
Damson colour, rich gourmet toasted style, this is great quality, plum, damson; black cherry, cocoa bean, hard to argue with. So much floral character, jumping out of the glass, flavourful and easy to recommend. Véronique Dausse is doing an excellent job at this estate, and once again it is showing at the very top of the appellation, holding up against the classified growths. Harvest September 10 to 26, 3.73 pH. 29 hl/ha yield, 55% new oak for ageing. Tasted twice.
