(Saint-Émilion; 40% Merlot; 45% Cabernet Franc; 15% Cabernet Sauvignon; a final yield of 35 hl/ha; 13% alcohol; tasted at the UGCB press tasting at the Cité du Vin and at Canon-La-Gaffèliere with Stephan and Ludovic von Neipperg; certified organic). This is so gracious, so very Canon-La-Gaffèliere, with a Cabernet Franc signature that is omnipresent and that renders this so beautifully beguiling. But let's not restrict this to the aromatics. For what we have, just as crucially, is a sumtpuous mouthfeel, quite an ample frame, above all on the attack, and a lovely pillowy, cashmere texture in the mouth. The majority of Cabernet fruit in the blend really makes this sing in 2025. This feels reassuring indulgent, generous, opulent but never blowsy, elegant and refined. We have both amplitude and crystallinity. There's a lovely luminous quality to this and it will, I am sure, age very gracefully. My favourite recent vintage of this. So measured and refined on the finish with brilliant clarity.

The moment peony and violet surge from the glass, I nearly lose my balance. Château Canon La Gaffelière 2025 brings freshness and elegance to an extreme. On entry, it feels like hundreds of cream-coated strawberries have been crushed at once, their juice rushing across the palate, as fruit and sensation rise together, lively and vivid like the night market of Lin’An city at its brightest. Most remarkable is the tannin: in this Right Bank blend of 45% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, it is handled with the precision of haute couture, without excess, draping the wine lightly in a veil of violet. Toward the finish, a fleeting trace of powdery feminine perfume passes softly, leaving behind a tender and lingering imagination.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2025 Canon-la-Gaffelière slowly emerges from the glass with fragrant notes of lavender and lilacs, giving way to a core of red currant jelly, red cherries, and fresh blackberries, plus suggestions of mossy tree bark, tar, and cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with mineral-laced red and black fruit layers, supported by grainy tannins and a refreshing line, finishing with a savory lift. The blend is 40% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The alcohol is 13%. This is aging in French oak barrels, 13% new.

High pumice stone grip, certainly very much on the limestone character, attractive and with plenty of lift and grip, and an underlying and highly attractive drama from grilled sandalwood and incense oak notes. A more subdued Canon la Gaffelière at this early stage, will widen and deepen over ageing. Yield 35 hl/ha. 30% new oak for ageing.
