2018 Brunello di Montalcino
The Giodo estate in the south-eastern zone of the DOCG is the dream project of one of Italy’s most celebrated oenologists, Carlo Ferrini . This 2018 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino makes a charming first impression on the nose with sweet tobacco cedar, spice and pepper notes but after two hours the aromas begin to open to rose and ripe, red cherry. On the palate there is a beautiful silky texture and some gentle notes of fine oak that has been subtly integrated with the wine, adding to the spicy, pepper flavors and all encased in beautifully, refined tannins. I have tasted this Brunello at least three times now - twice in Montalcino in November, when the wine was pretty closed but having just tasted it again in February I can say it takes a good two hours for this wine to fully open up but when it does it reveals a beautiful range of aromas and flavors.
96/100 Lisa Perrotti-Brown; The Wine Independent
Powerful and welcoming, with sweet black cherry and blueberry fruits, grilled sandalwood, smoked butterscotch, cut herbs and five spice, adding in sculpted edges of mint and sour cherry as it opens. The tannins are brushed velvet in texture, and this is full of life and punch. A 3ha site, producing 13,000 bottles. Carlo Ferrini winemaker.
