2014 Riesling Alte Reben Spätlese trocken
Karthäuserhof, Deutschland
This introduces mouthwatering, celery stalk salinity, stimulating nettle-like sting, framing stoniness and clarity to a bright display of citrus and white currant typical of 2014 Karthäuserhof Rieslings. And at only 11.3% alcohol, it shares the delightful buoyancy of the corresponding Kabinett and QbA bottlings. The quality difference vis-à-vis most of this wine’s siblings is especially noticeable in a finish of considerable energy and transparency to mineral nuances. (Like “Schieferkristall,” the designation “Alte Reben” was introduced some years ago in anticipation of an eventual VDP-wide elimination of Prädikat terms from the labels of legally dry wines. That said, the estate is at pains to emphasize that the wine really does issue from relatively old vines.)
